Santos Mahogany tree

Description -

A genus of tree grown in Central America (primarily in El Salvador) and South America, Cuba and Santo Domingo.  This exotic wood is dark brown, with a deep red heartwood. Natural oils grant it excellent decay resistance.  Having a Janka rating of 2200, its density proves it to be one of the more tougher hardwoods to cut, and is 71% harder than North American Red Oak.

Despite its name, Santos Mahogany is not really related to true Mahogany (Swietenia genus), nor is it even in the Meliaceae family, as is the case with African Mahogany (Khaya genus) and Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata).

Santos Mahogany can have a Mahogany-like appearance, though it is typically much denser, harder, and stronger than true Mahogany.  Santos Mahogany shows a fair degree of color variation between boards, ranging from a lighter golden brown to a darker purplish red or burgundy. The color tends to turn more red/purple with age. Its rich reddish brown or purplish brown coloring is beautiful left in its natural form. Most people do not color stain this wood. Santos mahogany has medium to coarse graining, as you can see in the image below. This wood is dense with very small pores, even smaller than that of Walnut hardwood. It is known to be quite hard, durable, and is a very stable floor. Santos mahogany is much harder than genuine mahogany. Genuine mahogany is actually too soft for most flooring applications. Santos mahogany, on the other hand, will stand up in high traffic areas. This means that it is an excellent choice for any room of your home.
